"Noise is more than just annoying. Prolonged exposure to it can significantly alter blood cholestrol and plasma cortisol levels. Soviet researchers have linked excessive industrial noise with high incidence among workers of circulatory, digestive, metabolic, neurological and psychiatric problems. It can also bring about changes in the skin's electrical potential, the skeletal tension of muscles, and gastro-intestinal motility. It can also, of course, make you deaf; by gradually raising the hearing threshold, which is the lowest level of noise the ear can register. Cinema managers in northern English industrial cities turn up their amplifiers higher than those in other parts of the country, presumably because most of their patrons have lost their ability to hear soundtracks reproduced at levels acceptable to a London audience. This is reliably reported as a demonstrated fact. [1]"

"Audible sound can be just as harmful as infrasound, though we all develop resistance to it to some extent. The Mabaan tribe of Sudan have no firearms or drums. Nor do they have deafness, hypertension or cardiovascular diseases, provided they stay in their homelands. When they move to Khartoum they tend to develop all these ailments, and a study of them has indicated that the noise factor is as important as those of general stress, diet or change in social environment. [2]"

"...two German researchers carried out a simple experiment. They took some volunteers, sat them in chairs and proceeded to shake them up and down from one to twenty times per second (British TV viewers may have seen something similar done on the BBC Tomorrow's World programme). At certain precisely measured frequencies, the subjects complained of pain or discomfort in practically every part of the body. They suffered breathing difficulties, muscle contractions, headaches, pains in the chest, back and genitals, and a general sick feeling over the whole range. Certain aches and pains corresponded to certain frequencies. In these experiments only mechanical vibrations were involved, but EM and acoustical vibrations are being set up all the time around us... Just because we can neither see nor consciously perceive them, we should not assume that they have no effects on us. [3]"
Unfortunately, and most disappointingly, the helicopters are still flying directly over us (at least 31 in a 12-hour period today). In response to my query to the airport this morning, I was informed that the trialling of a different route will now take place within the next week or two.
It is clear that not only the gas rig-bound helicopters are using this particular slice of air space now, but also an odd assortment of others. For example, a particularly large and extra-noisy monster crossed Woodland View from west to east (as opposed to the south-north route usually followed) at 11.16am., returning east to west at 12.44 - and at an even lower altitude. And please note, the photographs on this page are not artificially 'zoomed in': the helicopters fill the same field of vision in the camera as they do that of the naked eye. They really are as low as they appear to be.
Today's activity (excluding whatever flight/s woke me in the first place):

Some optimistic news. Following discussions between the airport and helicopter companies, beginning Monday, 23 February there will be a trial of a slight variation in the route taken by helicopters when flying out from Norwich to the rigs in the North Sea.
Someone is inevitably affected by whatever routes the helicopters take, but our case is that those living in brick-built houses are far better protected than the residents of Woodland View in Stratton Strawless, which is a large community of residential park homes ('mobile' homes). It is not just a question of noise for us, which, of course, we are more susceptible to due to the construction of our homes, but of vibration as well: doors, windows, ornaments and pictures rattle as the helicopters pass over. A number of studies have been publicised recently which deal with the damage to health which can be caused by disrupted and/or inadequate sleep and continual exposure to noise (see, for example, the "Dail Mail" of 11 November 2008 and 13 January 2009) which is giving us added cause for concern.
There will hopefully be a satisfactory resolution over the coming weeks. Watch this space.
We seem to be a step nearer to finding a satisfactory resolution. Stratton Strawless Parish Council has applied for a seat on the Airport Consultation Committee. Our application will be considered at the ACC's next meeting, the AGM on 16 February. On the one hand it is a little frustrating that, if the application is approved by the rest of the committee, we still cannot take an active part until the next meeting in June (the committee meets three times a year) but on the other we will at least be able to engage in formal discussion with the various relevant parties in the meantime.
The Operations Manager of Norwich Airport came out early yesterday morning (4 February) to see for himself what we are experiencing here at Woodland View and, while unable to promise anything in advance, seemed optimistic that some adjustments could be made to reduce the impact of helicopter operations on the community. The main problem has been, of course, that these 129 homes have not previously been shown on maps for this area and no one involved in recent changes to aircraft operations even knew of our existence until we began protesting.
Fingers still crossed!
Those who have previously visited this page will note various changes made. This is the result of my ongoing research into the situation and communications with the Department for Transport, the Air Accidents Investigation Branch, the Civil Aviation Authority, Norwich International Airport and Bristow Helicopters Ltd, all of whom have been courteous and helpful in their responses.
I have ascertained that what I thought was a 'near miss' (a technical term which doesn't have the same meaning for the layman) on 16 October wasn't one at all, but apparently quite a normal situation and not one that should cause alarm: the respective pilots were fully aware of each other's position and movements.
(I do have to say, however, that it seems to me a bit like like allowing a Formula 1 racing event in a residential area of a town on the grounds that the drivers can see each other and are skilled at what they do: the potential for an accident is nevertheless apparent.)
The problem we have here is an increasingly common one, that of achieving a balance between the business needs of an expanding airport and the quality of life of the local population.
Having low-level helicopter flights over Woodland View, however, is a new phenomenon for the residents; it didn't exist when we moved here (in the case of some, more than 30 years ago). We were here first, after all!
In fairness, I do have to say that neither the airport nor the helicopter companies based there seem to have been previously fully aware of the presence of our community at Woodland View (which comprises the largest percentage of the population of Stratton Strawless itself) nor the extent of the disturbance and distress caused to occupiers of residential park homes by low-level aircraft flights.
I am personally optimistic at the moment that progress is being made by both Bristow Helicopters and Norwich International Airport in seeking to resolve the problem. Their personnel have been very receptive to - and patient with - my persistent representations to them.
Fingers crossed that by Christmas we will have peace on earth and good will to all concerned!
On Saturday, 25 October 2008 we launched a petition, which reads:
"We, the undersigned residents of Woodland View mobile home park, Stratton Strawless, demand an immediate ban on low-level flights by helicopters - which cause insufferable noise and disturbance - over this highly vulnerable community."
Those who have noticed a sudden increase in the frequency of flights by the Air Ambulance lately will be surprised to learn that one of the helicopter companies (not Bristow) currently based at Norwich International Airport has apparently painted its helicopters the same yellow.
Perish the suggestion that this is a deliberate ploy to discourage the public from complaining about low-level flights over residential areas!

This list of flights is by no means comprehensive - I have only noted the ones observed while being at home, and then, only when I haven't been indisposed for one reason or another. / ------ / = unable to record times. * = light aircraft (or possibly so, when flight heard but not directly observed)
